July 29, 2010

New hawk-i dental benefits will begin March 1, 2010 include:

  • Orthodontics - These benefits will only be available if they are considered medically necessary. Orthodontics for cosmetic reasons only will not be considered.
    Examples:
    • Your middle-school-age child has a significant overbite with several teeth out of position that makes it difficult for him or her to chew. This condition may harm your child's health. So, it may be considered for benefits. Talk with your dentist to find out more.
    • Your middle-school age child is embarrassed of his or her smile because of crooked teeth but the jaws are acceptably aligned. This condition is not an immediate health concern. It does not qualify for the benefit.

You must use a participating hawk-i orthodontic provider to take advantage of orthodontic benefit coverage. Click here to find a list of these orthodontic providers.
  • Additional Benefits for High-Risk Plan Members - If your dentist believes your child is more likely than usual to develop cavities, the child will be allowed one additional fluoride treatment and one additional set of checkup x-rays.
  • Emergency Dental Services - If your child has a dental emergency, services will be covered, even if the benefit limit has been reached for the year.

The letter sent to the head of the household on March 1 also included the following:

  • A change to your Delta Dental of Iowa certificate - This document includes the changes to your benefits that were described above.
  • New identification card - With the number on this new card, your dentist can check benefits and file claims for you. Make sure you use this new card only! Please throw away any previous cards you may still have.
