Iowans are on a mission, and we won't stop until we are successful! Thanks to current Governor Terry Branstad, Iowa is striving to become the healthiest state in the nation by 2016.

The Healthiest State Initiative is a public strategy with a goal of improving the health of Iowa residents. Increasing our rank to 10th in the nation in 2013, Iowa was ranked 19th prior to the initiative launch.

In addition to endorsing healthy events around the state, Healthiest State Initiative hosts an annual walk, which Delta Dental of Iowa will support again this year. Nearly 300,000 Iowans walked to support the initiative.

Over the next few years, Healthiest State Initiative will focus on achieving success in 5 priority areas:

1)     Decreasing the number of Iowans who smoke

2)     Increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables

3)     Increasing the number of Iowans who are learning or doing something daily

4)     Increasing the number of Iowans who have visited the dentist in the last year

5)     Increasing the number of Iowans who feel their boss treats them like a partner at work

To reach our state goal, we need to continue making healthy food choices, and yes, this means at the Iowa State Fair as well. It's hard to resist all the fried goodness but try to indulge in one or two tasty treats only.

If you're planning a visit to the Iowa State Fair, make sure to stop by our booth on August 16th and say hi and get a chance to win Lady Antebellum tickets by correctly guessing the one of our dental health questions. Plus the kiddos will have the opportunity to meet the Tooth Fairy! Look for the green Delta Dental booth in front of the Varied Industries building on Saturday, August 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
