Dental Plan Comparison FAQs

  • What is the difference between Delta Dental's three plan options?

    Choose from three plan designs:

    • Platinum - our richest plan with a $2,000 annual benefit maximum. This plan covers check-ups, cleanings, x-rays, bridges, crowns, cavity repair, oral surgery, and implants. There are waiting periods for some services.
    • Preferred - our most popular plan with a $1,000 annual benefit maximum. This plan covers check-ups, cleanings, x-rays, bridges, crowns, cavity repair, oral surgery, and implants. There are waiting periods for some services.
    • Preventive - covers care for check-ups, cleanings, x-rays, and cavity repair.

    Benefits for children under 21

If you have children on your plan under the age of 21, you will need to decide if you would like to include the Affordable Care Act defined pediatric dental essential health benefit.

    • Prime Plans - These plans do not include the ACA defined pediatric dental essential health benefit (EHB). Adults and children will have the same copayments, deductibles and annual benefit maximums.
    • Plus Plans - These plans include the ACA defined pediatric dental essential health benefit (EHB). Children and adults will have different benefits. These Delta Dental plans for children include:
      • Coverage up to age 21 which exceeds the ACA requirement
      • No annual or lifetime benefit maximum for children's dental benefits
      • Medically necessary orthodontia coverage
  • What is Delta Dental Premier?

Delta Dental Premier® is a traditional fee-for-service network — the largest of its kind in the nation — giving members access to a wide selection of dentists. Dentists in this network agree to pre-established fees, which helps reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients. While benefits may not be as rich as PPO plans, members still enjoy:

    • Predictable costs with no balance billing.
    • Nationwide access to participating providers.
    • Direct claim filing by your provider.

It's a great option if your dentist is not in the PPO network but still participates in the Delta Dental Premier network.

  • What Is Delta Dental PPO?

Delta Dental PPO™ offers the greatest savings and value. Dentists in this network agree to the lowest contracted fees, which means:

    • Lower out-of-pocket costs.
    • No balance billing.
    • Direct claim filing by your provider.

To get the best value from your dental benefits, choose a Delta Dental PPO network dentist. These plans also offer flexibility and nationwide access to providers.

  • What is the best way to compare dental insurance plans?

To find the plan that fits your needs and budget, compare plans based on:

    • Coverage Level: Look at what’s included — preventive care only, or major services like crowns and bridges?
    • Annual Maximum: Each plan has a limit on how much will be paid per year (e.g., $1,000 or $2,000).
    • Deductibles & Coinsurance: Understand your costs before coverage kicks in and what portion you pay after.
    • Provider Network Access: PPO network dentists offer the lowest costs, but Premier dentists may offer broader availability.
    • Waiting Periods: Some plans have delays before certain services (like implants or root canals) are covered.

Check out plan summaries for options like Preventive Prime, Preferred Prime, and Platinum Prime to see what aligns with your dental care needs.

  • How can I compare dental insurance coverage for specific needs?

Start by identifying your dental care priorities:

    • Just preventive care? The Preventive Prime plan offers affordable coverage for checkups, cleanings, and x-rays.
    • Need restorative or major services? Consider the Preferred Prime or Platinum Prime plans, which cover fillings, crowns, root canals, and more.
    • Anticipating extensive dental work? Platinum Prime offers the highest annual maximum ($2,000) and lower coinsurance rates for many complex procedures.

Choose Your Dentist & Your Savings

Delta Dental's dual network gives you the freedom to choose the best dentist for you.

  • Select a dentist in the Delta Dental PPOSM Network (includes 40% of Iowa dentists1) for the lowest out-of-pocket expenses and the richest benefits.

OR

  • Choose a dentist in the Delta Dental Premier® Network (94% of Iowa dentists and 80% nationwide1) for a wider choice of dentists and low out-of-pocket expenses with reduced benefits.

OR

  • For exceptional situations, you may choose a dentist outside of either of our networks and receive coverage at higher costs with fewest benefits.

*Deductible applies to diagnostic and preventive services under the Preventive plan.
**Oral surgery and extractions are not covered under the Preventive plan.
