5 oral health tips for college students
Posted on September 4, 2025 in Healthy You

Your first year of college is the beginning of an adventure — new friends, late nights, dorm food and a whole new level of independence. But as you go through this major transition, you still need to take care of your oral health. Keeping your mouth healthy now can help you avoid cavities, gum problems and big dental bills later. Here’s how to stay on top of your oral health when campus life gets busy.
1. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months
Set a reminder on your calendar to replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3 months (or sooner if you get sick or if the bristles are bending). Toothbrushes need to be replaced regularly so they can properly clean your mouth.
Tip: Buy a multi-pack of toothbrushes or electric toothbrush heads at the start of the semester so you always have a fresh one ready.
2. Stick with fluoride toothpaste
Trendy toothpastes that influencers sell on social media may be tempting, but fluoride toothpastes are the best at fighting cavities and strengthening your enamel (the protective outer layer of your teeth).
Tip: Picking the right toothpaste is important. If you’re overwhelmed with choices, choose one with the ADA Seal. These products have been carefully reviewed for their safety and effectiveness, so you can feel confident using one of these options.
3. Water: Don’t leave your dorm without it
Coffee for early classes and energy drinks for late-night study sessions are practically college drink staples. But too many sugary or acidic drinks can weaken enamel and dry out your mouth. Water helps rinse away leftover food and keeps your mouth hydrated, so keep it handy.
Tip: Keep a reusable water bottle in your backpack and refill it throughout the day. Bonus points: Using a reusable water bottle is not only good for your oral health but also good for the planet.
4. Choose healthier options
Dining halls offer a wide array of food — some better for you than others. You don’t always have to pick the most nutritious items, but it’s important to add healthful options to your meals. Round out your main entree with crisp fruits and veggies, which help scrub your teeth between brushing. Choose lean meat and low-fat dairy, which also support your oral health.
Tip: Stock your dorm mini-fridge with yogurt cups, cheese sticks and crunchy produce (think baby carrots and celery sticks) for easy grab-and-go snacks.
5. Dentist visits don’t stop in college
You should continue to see your dentist every 6 months for a deep cleaning and checkup. College can throw off your routine, so make sure you have a plan to get these two-yearly visits on the calendar so you can keep your oral health in tip-top shape.
Tip: If you’re studying away from home, scheduling your twice-yearly dentist visits during school breaks when you’re back at home is smart. Or, you can see if your school’s health center has dental resources for you to get on-campus care.
College is a time where you gain independence and grow as an adult. As you adjust to new schedules, pressures and expectations, don’t forget that taking care of your oral health remains a priority. Making good lifestyle choices will serve you throughout your college experience and beyond. Drinking plenty of water, eating healthy food and seeing your dentist twice yearly helps keep your mouth healthy while ensuring that any potential issues are found early, when they’re easier and much less expensive to treat.
