3 Dental Benefit Options if You Lose Your Job

Whether you've been laid off or terminated, losing a job is stressful. Aside from income insecurity, you have health and dental insurance to worry about. Here are three options to consider during your employment transition:

1. Use it before you lose it.

Learn when your dental benefits are discontinued, as you may be covered until the end of the month. Every week of extra coverage matters, so make a dental appointment while your dental benefits are still activated.

2. Apply for COBRA.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) requires employers with 20+ employees to offer continued insurance for up to 18 months after termination. And if you had vision and dental through your previous employer, the COBRA Act applies to those benefits, too. Under COBRA, the former employee is responsible for paying 100% of the premium.

3. Individual coverage.

Many insurers have added options for individuals to plans directly from the company. Shop around for individual plans and reap the benefits of having these benefits.
