Fire Up the BBQ for a Healthy “Grill”

It's patio season! In honor of National Barbecue Month, here are some healthy ideas to honor our great pork state and will be sure to make your “grill” smile:


Think Beyond the Meat.

Barbeque served with a variety of grilled vegetables, like zucchini, squash, peppers or onions, is an easy way to jazz up the main course and please your pearly whites.

For an easy hors d'oeuvre, try slicing zucchini, then wrapping it around a spoonful of goat cheese.

For a kid-approved healthy side, try grilling carrots and sprinkling with your favorite herbs. Discover these veggies and other fun options at one of Iowa's local Iowa Farmer's Markets.

Main Course.

Beef, pork and chicken are always summer BBQ favorites, but if you're searching for a lighter fare to try out on the grill, seafood is a great option. With power-packed nutrition and great flavor, grilling fish like cedar-planked salmon will take your BBQ to a new level.

Grilled Dessert?

When it comes to dessert, you'll want to 1) save room, and 2) keep your grill warm.

For a sweet but healthy treat, grilled pineapple and apples are great on a grill. Fruit's natural sweetness will satisfy your sweet tooth without exposing your chompers to excess or processed sugar. Kick it up a notch with some yogurt sauce or cinnamon.
